Great (and truly free) security software...

Along with Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird, I've been using the software packages below for over three years; these programs work in all current versions of Windows (including Vista, ughhh!) and my customers have had very few recurring problems. If they are maintained correctly and if scans are run regularly you WILL be protected; this is NOT necessarily the case with commercial security suites such as Norton Internet Security or McAfee Firewall. For an overview of why anti-virus and anti-spyware programs are needed, read my four-part introduction to Internet security software here.

Another good site to check out, if you don't want to take my word for it, is Steve Gibson's excellent utilities and research site (www.grc.com) . There you will find an excellent suite of utilities for securing Windows machines. The transcripts (audio and text) for the excellent Security Now! series are also to be found there.

Anti-Spyware Programs:

Spybot Search and Destroy ver 1.4 (www.safer-networking.org)

SpywareBlaster 3.51 (www.javacoolsoftware.com)
If you are running Windows 95/98/Me, you need the Visual Basic 6.0 Runtime Libraries in order to run SpywareBlaster.
Anti-Virus Programs:

Avast! Home Edition (www.avast.com)

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition  (free.grisoft.com)

And if you want to know a little more about how to use the above programs, I've written a short instruction page for my customers, based on my usual setup of them, here.
